Growing up

Image
Putting this together was a good experience for me. It reminded me of a lot of happy times that I have had in my life and it made me happy. I loved looking through the pictures that I have on the board and looking through the pictures that I did not print out as I was trying to find pictures to post on my board. This project also reminded me on how much my family means to me and how much I love them for everything they have done for me and everything they will do for me. I truly did appreciate doing this project.

Nature Vs. Nurture

Image
The Nature Vs. Nurture debate is about what aspects a child has and if it is inherited from the parents or if they learned it as they grew up. Nature is considered what the child inherits from the parents and nurture is considered by the effect of the external things in life. This debate that has been going for many years was thought to come to a conclusion but recent studies show that almost everything comes from genetics. Examples: Intelligence Nature: Some people believe that the ability to achieve greatness and do well in school comes from the intelligence of ones parent.  Nurture: Other people believe what the Childs educational background is and how the child is raised influences the Childs intelligence.  Athletic Ability Nature: Some people believe that certain genes are inherited by the child to show their athletic ability.  Nurture: This is believed that athletes train to excel at the sport that they compete in.  Music Abilit...

How fast the brain works

For the project I conducted a test with my roommate. For the test I used a standard ruler, a desk, a chair, and my roommate Ethan. The results were the test were very surprising to me. The test went like this: 1. Ethan sat close to the table where is dominant hand was hanging over the edge. 2. I was holding the ruler to the where the bottom of it was at Ethan's hand and my instructions to Ethan were as soon as you saw the ruler drop catch it. 3. I did this process 3 more times. 4. To add a variable into this test I had Ethan close his eyes and when I said go to try and catch the ruler. I tested this again 4 times. 5. To add a different variable I had Ethan close his eyes again but instead of me saying go I would touch his shoulder to signal to him when to try and catch the ruler. 6. If Ethan did not catch the ruler I put 80 to represent where the ruler would have hit the floor. Here are the results from all the test: Visual test: trial 1         ...

The rubber hand illusion

Image
Something that had me turn my head in wonder in this weeks readings and videos was the rubber hand illusion. When I first started watching the video I didn't think that the people who were being tested would feel anything. I thought this because the rubber had wasn't part of their body. I was amazed that the subjects being tested started to feel like the rubber hand was a part of their own body. It also fascinated me when the proctor of the test brought out a hammer and smashed the rubber hand that the test subjects were surprise and acted like they had actually been hit. Seeing this experiment I really want to try this out at home and see what the effects would be in person.

Brain and Behavior

In this chapter the main topic is about the brain and how it develops and how it has been researched for many years. The ted talk I liked was by scientist Miguel Nicolelis. H e built the brain-controlled exoskeleton that allowed a paralyzed man to kick the first ball of the 2014 World Cup. How can someone build a vest that transmits the motion from your brain to parts of your body that is paralyzed? Miguel Nicolelis did just that. So, basically he put this exoskeleton together, 15 degrees of freedom, hydraulic machine that can be commanded by brain signals recorded by a non-invasive technology called electroencephalography that can basically allow the patient to imagine the movements and send his commands to the controls, the motors, and get it done. This exoskeleton was covered with an artificial skin invented by Gordon Cheng. The research that has been done has helped us take huge strides in helping us u...
