The rubber hand illusion

Something that had me turn my head in wonder in this weeks readings and videos was the rubber hand illusion. When I first started watching the video I didn't think that the people who were being tested would feel anything. I thought this because the rubber had wasn't part of their body. I was amazed that the subjects being tested started to feel like the rubber hand was a part of their own body. It also fascinated me when the proctor of the test brought out a hammer and smashed the rubber hand that the test subjects were surprise and acted like they had actually been hit. Seeing this experiment I really want to try this out at home and see what the effects would be in person.

  1. Hi Hayden,
I also did not know what to expect when I watched the rubber hand illusion performed on people. It was very strange but cool to see how the brain adapted to the rubber hand and took ownership of it! It makes me think of how technology is advancing how that somehow people that are quadriplegic and paraplegic might have opportunities to have feeling again because of what the brain can adapt to. Great post!

  2. Having that video or the research study hyperlinked here in your post would have made it easier for readers. Also, a brief explanation of why and how of the science behind the pain in the rubber hand would have been helpful.

  3. Hayden, I really liked this blog it was very interesting. I watched this video as well and I was so surprised that everyone got so scared when he smashed the rubber hand with a hammer. Its crazy how the brain can adapt to something so fast. I look forward to reading more of your blogs!
